Dear Mrs. O'Neil,
On Nov. 10, 2005 my wife, Martha, and I were in Odessa, TX attending a birthday party for one of our great granddaughters, when my daughter, Lynda, said she was not feeling well and went to her room to rest. About 5 minutes later, her husband went to check on her and heard her fall in the bathroom. We heard him shout that Lynda had fallen down and to call 911. As we started toward the hall, he said she was not breathing. Martha pushed me and said, "You know CPR." When I got to the bathroom she was ashen, eyes wide open, no pulse, not breathing and her windpipe was blocked from vomiting. Tom, her husband, was trying to force air into her lungs. I told him to turn her head to one side, and I placed my hands under her breastbone and thrust upwards twice, and the blockage came loose. I began CPR and Tom did mouth-to-mouth and checked for a pulse. We continued until the EMTs arrived and took over and defibrillated her. As they took her to the ambulance, one of the men said to me, "We got her heart and breathing started, but it doesn't look good."
We did not do the greatest CPR job, but it worked!!! Without your refresher course, I would not have been able to do what was done without thinking. Thanks to CPR, God's help, and great doctors, my daughter is rapidly getting well.
With my eternal thanks,
Jim
